New York: Famous auction house Sotheby's announced recently that a 76 million-year-old fossil dinosaur skeleton will be auctioned in New York City this month. Sotheby's pre-sales estimate for this skeleton is $5 million to $8 million. It is the only specimen of its kind available for private ownership.
According to America's "USA Today" newspaper, this skeleton is about 10 feet in height while its length is 22 feet. The newspaper writes that this Gorgosaurus skeleton was found in the Judith River Formation near Havre, Montana in 2018. According to Sotheby's, the discovery was "extraordinary" because of the rarity of Gorgosaurus material found in the United States.
US-based CBS News quoted auction house Sotheby's as saying that the Gorgosaurus skeletons will be auctioned on July 28, adding a new chapter to Sotheby's successful journey when they enter the natural history auction. Gorgosaurus was an apex carnivore that lived in what is now the western United States and Canada during the Cretaceous period.
Distinctive features of Gorgosaurus include its large head, dozens of curved and serrated teeth, and small two-fingered front limbs. According to Sotheby's, a typical adult male can weigh up to 2 tons.
